The Original Winnie-the-Pooh
July 18, 2011
With the July 15th, 2011 release of “Winnie-the-Pooh” on the big screen, I wondered if more crowds are visiting the New York Public Library to see the original Hundred Acre toys?
Seeking out the original Winnie-the-Pooh (WTP) characters was my #1 thing to do in NYC, and it proved delightful. I had the exhibit room of the Children’s Library all to myself as I gleefully snapped up pictures. Did you know that WTP came from Harrod’s department store in London? His original name was Edward and he was a birthday gift for Christopher Milne between 1922-1924. Milne gave the toys to his NY publishers, who later donated the gang to the main library in 1987.
Although A.A. Milne and his son had a love/hate relationship with the Bear, A.A. Milne created an immortal legacy of joy for thousands of children and adults.
