“Feeling Good” on a Mighty Monday

June 25, 2012 ,

Nina Simone (1933-2003) lived a fighting life as an American singer, civil rights activist, and song writer.  Although this classically trained pianist was first rejected from Philadelphia’s Curtis Institute, she ultimately attended NYC’s Juilliard School of Music.  Born as Eunice Kathleen Waymon to a minister mother, Ms. Simone’s unparalleled voice sounds as gritty as her moxie.  Her rendition of “Feeling Good” bespeaks a hard-won liberation.  It’s as if these lyrics were written for her.  The lyric’s imagery lifts me, and will perhaps propel another listener, if only for a moment.

Onward and upward to a new week!

“Feeling Good” (1964). Songwriters: Leslie Bricusse and Anthony Newley
